City’s Munster sewage plan is a puzzle
Re: Costly pipe to Munster, Oct. 2
It has always puzzled me what is behind the City of
Ottawa’s decision to avoid the less costly and more
environmentally friendly solution of on-site sewage treatment in
Munster.
The proposed pipeline will pass through the
significant wetland of the Richmond Fen, as well as the
residential parts of the village of Richmond. Construction will
involve pumping raw sewage into the former sewage lagoons located
in the Richmond Conservation Area.
The
existing pipeline from Richmond to Ottawa has recently experienced
breakages where it crosses the Jock River. In addition, the route
of the pipeline will pass along parts of the Rideau Trail that
cross the Richmond Conservation Area and other parts of the Jock
River watershed, causing surface disruption and defacement of the
landscape.
